Invest Successfully in Upskilling

The survey of more than 4,500 workers and managers by the Chartered Management Institute, conducted by YouGov, found that 82 per cent of those who enter management positions have not had any proper training, known as accidental managers’.

What are the causes leading to that?

Speed, poor identification of leadership potential, lack of investment in leadership programs, promotions based on internal relationships and profile rather than ability and performance, or promotions based on technical competence that ignore behavior and other key leadership traits.

These are choices made by decision makers.

And…which is the impact?

  • Failures with impact on harming individuals and their employers
  • High personnel fluctuation (due to lack of motivation and job satisfaction),
  • Lack of productivity
  • Leadership programs based on training and coaching are supporting the nurturing of the confidence needed to put new skills and behaviors into practice.

CIPD is also bringing more evidence (via another survey) about the quality of line management which has an impact on employees’ health and wellbeing.

One thing remains clear for me – it is hard to grow a business without bringing people together, empowering them to take ownership and become accountable; building and developing teams, manifesting collective leadership, and creating value.

Even if there are still many “one man shows” people in businesses, to reach the next threshold, maintain and then grow further you cannot do it by cultivating this model behaviors. Developing individuals and teams, approaching succession planning consistently and offering time (1 year) for behaviors development will convey into a sustainable and confident path forward. Behaviors are shaping organizational cultures.
